What Are the Black Streaks on My Roof?

By David Jones, Owner

Black streaks on asphalt shingles are usually a type of algae, often called Gloeocapsa magma, rather than dirt or soot. A low-pressure soft wash treats the growth without relying on the force that can strip shingle granules. Surface condition still matters, so the roof should be assessed before cleaning.

If one side of your home looks much darker than the rest, the difference can be alarming. Staining alone does not tell you whether the roof needs replacement. Start by separating a cleaning problem from a roofing problem, then choose the appropriate next step. Our roof-cleaning service focuses on organic staining on asphalt shingles.

What causes black streaks?

Algae can spread across shingles and produce dark discoloration. The streaks are often more noticeable on north-facing or shaded roof faces, where surfaces stay damp longer. Two sides of the same house may therefore look quite different even though they were installed together. Nearby trees and shade can help explain the pattern, but a photo is only a starting point for assessment.

You may notice long dark trails rather than an evenly dirty surface. Tell us which roof faces have changed and whether you also see raised growth. Wide photos show the overall pattern; closer photos taken safely from the ground can help show the texture. There is no need to climb onto the roof for a quote.

Is it just cosmetic?

Black algae staining is commonly an appearance concern. A dark roof can look older than it is, but cleaning is not a diagnosis of its remaining useful life. Staining, missing shingles and a leak are different issues and should not be treated as interchangeable. We do not promise that cleaning adds a specific number of years to a roof.

If the shingles look intact and the main concern is discoloration, cleaning may be worth discussing. If you have water entering the building or visible damage, have a roofer assess that first. We can explain what cleaning is intended to address, without presenting it as a substitute for repair.

Why pressure washing shingles is a bad idea

High pressure can dislodge protective granules and damage asphalt shingles. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association’s algae-cleaning bulletin advises gentle application and rinsing and warns against power washing. It also cautions against abrasive brushing. More force is not the answer to a stubborn-looking roof stain.

Our approach uses treatment rather than an aggressive blast. The method must suit the roofing material and its condition. Calling a process “soft washing” does not remove the need for careful preparation, controlled application and realistic expectations. We review the job before deciding how to proceed.

How our soft-wash roof cleaning works

  1. Photos: Send views of the roof and the property location so we can understand the staining and access.
  2. Quote: We review the scope, explain the proposed work and provide a price before scheduling.
  3. Treatment: We apply a roof-appropriate treatment at low or no pressure to address the organic growth.
  4. Plant protection rinse: We plan around landscaping and runoff, with protective watering and rinsing around the work.
  5. Follow-up: We explain what to expect and the follow-up included with your selected package.

The exact setup depends on the roof and surrounding property. Let us know about access restrictions or a lack of on-site water. Water is preferable but not required; those details help us prepare rather than discovering a limitation when we arrive.

What to expect afterward

Black staining often improves quickly. Heavier growth or residue can continue to loosen and weather away afterward, so the roof may not look finished immediately. We explain the likely result for your roof rather than promising that every streak will vanish on the day of treatment. If something concerns you afterward, contact us so we can review it.

For local examples, see the El Dorado church roof and the El Dorado two-story home and garage roof. Those projects show actual treated properties, not a guaranteed outcome for every roof. Browse our projects to see the surfaces and conditions behind the results.

Moss and lichen vs algae

Algae often presents as dark staining. Moss can look thicker and raised, while lichen can appear as attached patches. These are not all the same cleaning situation. Heavier attached growth needs its own assessment and expectations. Avoid trying to scrape or blast it away simply to make the roof look clean immediately.

When to call a roofer instead

Curling shingles, missing shingles, visible damage or a leak warrant a roofing assessment. Cleaning does not replace shingles or repair water entry. If you are being urged to replace a roof based only on its color, ask what physical condition supports that recommendation. A cleaner appearance and a sound roof are separate questions.

FAQ

What are black streaks on a roof?

They are usually algae discoloration on asphalt shingles, often associated with Gloeocapsa magma, rather than ordinary dirt or soot.

Are black roof streaks harmful?

Algae staining is commonly an appearance concern. Do not use its color alone to judge roof condition; damaged or leaking roofing needs a roofing assessment.

Can I pressure wash my roof?

Do not use high-pressure washing on asphalt shingles. It can remove granules and damage the shingles.

Does soft washing damage shingles?

A roof-appropriate low-pressure treatment avoids the damaging force of high-pressure washing. Existing condition and the application method still need assessment.

How long until streaks disappear?

Black staining often improves quickly, while heavier growth and residue may continue to weather away. We explain the expected result before work.

How much does roof algae cleaning cost in Wichita?

The published roof-cleaning range is $450–$2,200. The cost guide explains package bands; large, steep or complex roofs require a custom quote.
